Science journalism has flooded our newsfeeds over the past year with daily stories about COVID-19. This urgent need of news has set authors with science know-how in the middle of the center.
Science journalism may appear a significant crying from the breeding mice, split cells or patient stories, but freelance writing about science offers its own rewards.
freelancers have freedom to work from anywhere, design their own schedule and follow their curiosity. So, what freelance write options are available upon receipt of a doctoral or professional finish?
On April 22, Dr. Esther Landhuis with students about the ins and the outs to be a freelance science journalist at synapse of the third annual scientific event. Landhuis' stories are in sales locations such as scientific Americans, NPR, nature, Unrark, quanta ??em>.
"I think you will find if you talk to other people in scientific journalism, many of us were not really what we do what we do," said Landhuis. "At a certain point in time we got on an adventure and landed at the stay."
from Promotion to Journalism
Originally from California, Landhuis' parents from China to the USA. Growing up, she was convinced that she would go to science.
"My immediate and extended family were all scientists and mathematicians, so I think they would say that science would be a standard path for me," said Landhuis.
She received her bachelor's degree from Stanford University before being started at Harvard University with a promotion in immunology. It was there, during a particularly difficult time in her research, she began to consider career outside of science.
"I found myself at a time she was looking forward to finishing her thesis and soon defending, instead I found myself with zero-releasable data," she said.
The situation led them to "a lot of soul search", and Landhuis began to read alternative careers in science: the ivory tower , a book about career for phds ranging from the patent law until advice .
"I did not know that the science journalism was a little against the age of 25," she said.
At that time, career outside the research track was not generally spoken.
But Landhuis had found a new direction. After switching from research projects and completion of your doctoral program, you entered the program of the UC Santa Cruz Science Community Master.
"They really thrown us into the fire from the first day," she said, describing the program as a "learning part".
During this time, she interned with local newspapers and wrote press releases for Stanford University.
After graduating with their degree in science communication, she acquired a wide range of experience that is concerned as Health Science Reporter for the San Jose Mercury News, and then wrote for the research forum of Alzheimer's.She said that the newsroom experience was structured by daily deadlines and good for those who work in a quick pace.
Writing for the research forum, she said, unlike other scientific communication she had done because she writes for an audience, which was compiled mainly by scientists.
Nevertheless, she was looking for a job that used a slower, methodological thinking to develop articles for a broader audience.
"I just started Jucket to write about various topics for different publications," she said.
In 2014, Landhus entered the world of freelance.
challenges, a freelance journalist
Freelancing offers flexibility to "shape your schedule nearby, which is needed in different lifetime," said Landhuis.
However, it comes with its own challenges.
"The biggest challenge with freelancing is that you have to do a lot of work to find your work," she said.
In order to land even on a task, freelance journalists have to find their own ideas to provide a pitch to convince the editors of the story that the story achieves the publication and that they are the right person to write it.
Especially in the early stages of the career "You must be ready to set yourself with the rejection after rejection," said Landhuis.
But rejection can also be a learning process.
"Some editors communicate with them and tell them why they are rejected, give them tips, even if they can make their pitches better," she said.
Symuis discovered that the skills owned by a scientist translates well to scientific journalism. The curious and examining way of thinking, the attention to detail and the desire to communicate insights into an audience are essential properties that one Successful freelance writer cultivated.
In a sense, Landhuis said she believes that she thinks deeper about science as a journalist as a journalist when she did during the PhD-PhD. As a graduate student, she was often disappointed by experiments who did not work and spent a lot of time and mental energy methods. As a science journalist, she can withdraw and see the larger picture.
Landhuis' tips for breaking the science letter as a trainee in the medical or graduate school including writing for student phenomena such as synapse together with the writing of local newspapers and pitching articles for conversation, one of written publication From scientists for a wide audience.
The point is to try further. As soon as a writer gets their foot in the door, and their cylinders in some publications, they can establish themselves as trusted freelancers and facilitate new tasks.
Jihee Yoon and Victoria Sayo Turner are co-editor boss of synapse. Jihee is a third year DDS / PhD student in the organic and craniofacial sciences program, and Victoria is a fifth year studying the fifth year's student studying the neurosciences of stress.
